This year celebrating its 35th anniversary, Magyar Suzuki has had a significant impact not only on Hungary’s automotive sector but also on the global industry. As the Japanese group’s sole manufacturing base in Europe, over three and a half decades the company has become a key player in the Hungarian economy, while consistently maintaining a strong position among the most popular automotive brands and models.
After a hiatus of fifty years, passenger car manufacturing in Hungary was revived in 1991 when Suzuki Motor Corporation, the Hungarian government, Itochu and the World Bank jointly established Magyar Suzuki. The Japanese partners set up a state-of-the-art facility in Hungary, implementing full-scale manufacturing operations. Production commenced in 1992 with the mass production of the Suzuki Swift, making vehicles manufactured in Hungary widely accessible. Suzuki models quickly gained popularity among Hungarian consumers, earning the affectionate nickname of “our car”.
Over the past 35 years, seven models have been produced in Esztergom: in addition to the Swift, the Wagon R+, Ignis, SX4, Splash, SX4 S-CROSS and the Vitara. In 2024, the four millionth Suzuki vehicle rolled off the Hungarian production line. In keeping with its commitment to sustainable mobility, Magyar Suzuki has supplied European markets exclusively with hybrid models since 2020. Currently, the Vitara and S-CROSS models are manufactured in Esztergom.
High levels of expertise and technical capability
Magyar Suzuki is a key player in the automotive manufacturing sector. The company continuously develops its operations, with a focus on digitalisation, efficiency improvements, maximising existing capacity, responding flexibly to future demand, and achieving carbon-neutral operations. Since its establishment, the Japanese group has invested more than EUR 2 billion in Hungary.
Over the decades, the Esztergom-based manufacturing company has built up substantial expertise and know-how, particularly in engineering, logistics and IT. In addition, it coordinates major international projects. Magyar Suzuki provides IT services and developments for the entire European region, including the Suzuki Connect service introduced in autumn 2022. European legal and compliance activities are also managed from Hungary.
A stable economic contributor in Hungary

As one of the country’s leading industrial companies, Magyar Suzuki consistently ranks among Hungary’s top 20 companies by revenue. Through its partners, suppliers and its nationwide network of 78 authorised dealers, the company contributes to the livelihoods of approximately 10,000 people. Suzuki models manufactured in Esztergom and those imported into Hungary are among the most popular choices for both private and fleet customers. Over the decades, the company has topped Hungary’s new passenger car sales rankings on 22 occasions.
In addition to manufacturing vehicles for both the domestic market and exporting to more than 100 countries worldwide, the company is also engaged in the distribution of imported Suzuki passenger cars, motorcycles and marine outboard engines.
A sustainable future
Aligned with the objectives of its parent company, Suzuki aims to achieve carbon neutrality globally by 2050, both in manufacturing and in its product portfolio. Magyar Suzuki is also committed to these goals and places strong emphasis on sustainable operations and production, supported by its own solar power park and heat pump systems.
Valued employees and long-standing partnerships
As one of the largest employers in the region, the company places increasing emphasis on training and development. With the rapid advancement of new technologies and evolving industry requirements, talent development has become a strategic priority. The Esztergom-based company addresses this through dedicated internal programmes.
The Suzuki Academy operates as an overarching training initiative, supporting knowledge sharing within the organisation while also contributing to the development of competencies required for the company’s European operations. Through these efforts, the Esztergom centre is strengthening its role not only as a manufacturing hub but increasingly as a centre of excellence within Suzuki’s European presence.
